Eratosthenes of Cyrene ( c. 276 BC – c. 195/194 BC) was a Greek mathematiciaN,geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist. He was a man of learning, becoming the chief librarian at the Library of Alexandria. He invented the discipline of geography, including the terminology used today.

Toponyms
Toponyms are the names of places. Place names are created in a number of different ways.
1. Some places are named after religious figures IE: San Francisco, St. Louis. 2. Some places are named after non-religious people. IE: Washington D.C., Pennsylvania 3. Some places are named after pre-existing places. IE: New York, New Mexico, New Jersey. 4. Some places are names after physical characteristics. IE: The Grand Canyon, Red Rock Preservation Site. 5. Some places are named after good or bad experiences of the early settlers. IE: Gold Point and Eureka vs. Massacre Lake and Battle Mountain. 6. Some places get new names. Mt. McKinley was just renamed Denali. Byzantiuum became Constantinople became Istanbul.
